“Hey kawan, jom limteh!” “Anney, teh O ice satu!” “Boss, nak thosai dua” The beautiful memories it holds for me is when I was at a small food stall with my father and his Malay and Indian friends having our breakfast together, back in 90’ when I was only 10. I still remember that day was Merdeka day, suddenly we heard the song “Tanggal 31” from the radio, my father and his friends sang the song together happily, then followed by the rest of the people who were there at the food stall too. It was so sweet, beautiful and harmonious atmosphere, and hilarious too! 🤣 That was the most amazing thing and patriotic moment I’ve ever seen! To me, Merdeka means Muhibah. We all dress differently, use different languages, living in different cultures but we all have one thing in common, we’re Malaysian who lives in harmony, united and peace. Merdeka means a lot to me. It signifies independence, freedom and sovereignty. Being a post–Merdeka child, I know I did not fully appreciate this or understand how valuable Merdeka is until I started to do work in disasters, especially conflict related. Being able to see how communities, which are affected by war, have no choice, freedom and often little dignity makes me realise that what we have in Malaysia is so important, and we must do our best to preserve it. Our country’s road to independence was not without sacrifices and being a multiracial nation, we need to respect that everyone has a role, and every man, woman and child has a right to that same independence, freedom and sovereignty which we have achieved. Merdeka is also about peace and harmony and what we must do to ensure that the balance between development and progress does not jeopardise it. Merdeka is about gratitude.
